Hearing Evaluations
What Happens During Your Hearing Evaluation
A hearing evaluation in Akron, OH starts with a conversation, not a clipboard. Our staff sits down and completes your case history with you, then runs a full audiometric assessment: otoscopic look at the canal and eardrum, pure tone air and bone conduction thresholds, and word recognition testing. We then talk through what you actually need to hear at home and at work before any recommendation gets made.
Twenty Years of Reading Ohio Audiograms
Advanced EARGEAR has tested hearing in Ohio since 2006, and the practice is led by a certified Audioprosthologist, a credential that sits above standard hearing instrument licensure. A Doctor of Audiology now directs our clinical side, and the staff together holds over 100 years of work with the hearing impaired. We are credentialed with every Medicare supplement plan plus Anthem, Aetna, Humana and UnitedHealthcare, which keeps a diagnostic hearing evaluation accessible for most patients.
Hearing Evaluation FAQs
What Ohio patients ask before booking a hearing test: what gets measured, how long the appointment runs, whether insurance covers it, and what happens after the results.
Every new patient at Advanced EARGEAR starts here. We look in the ear canal with an otoscope to rule out wax, fluid, or a perforated eardrum, then measure air and bone conduction thresholds across the speech frequencies. Speech testing follows, because the number that matters most to daily life is how clearly you understand words, not how faintly you can detect a tone.
Those results plot your audiogram and show the type and degree of any loss, whether it is sensorineural, conductive, or mixed. The second half of the appointment is the part patients remember: we sit with you, go through the graph line by line, and explain what it means for restaurants, phone calls, and church. Book at whichever office is closest — every Ohio location and its direct number is listed on our locations page.
A first appointment takes longer than a quick screening, and that is on purpose. The audiometric testing moves along at a steady clip, but we build in time for the case history beforehand and the results conversation afterward, and neither gets rushed. If you also want to talk through hearing aids, mention it when you call and we will hold a longer slot for you.
There is nothing to print out or fill in beforehand. We do not hand patients a clipboard and walk away. A staff member completes the paperwork and the case history with you, which is deliberate: it is faster, it is more accurate, and it is how we get to know you. Bring a list of your medications and, if you have one, a previous audiogram.
No. Most patients call us directly, usually after months of turning the television up or asking people to repeat themselves. We also see plenty of patients sent over by their family doctor, an ENT, or their insurance company, and we are glad to send results back to whoever referred you.
Coverage is the one place a referral sometimes matters. A few commercial plans want a primary care referral on file before they will pay for diagnostic testing. Advanced EARGEAR is credentialed with every Medicare supplement plan along with Anthem, Aetna, Humana, Medicare Gold, and UnitedHealthcare. Tell us your plan when you book and we will check the requirements before you drive over. Newark is (740) 920-4608, and the rest of our Ohio offices are listed with their own numbers.
First you get a straight answer about what the audiogram shows and what it does not. Some findings are medical rather than audiological. Impacted wax, middle ear fluid, or a sudden one sided change belongs with a physician or an ENT, and we will say so and make the referral.
When the loss is one that hearing aids address, the next conversation is about your life, not a product line. We fit every major manufacturer, with ReSound as our primary line, at every technology level and price point. CareCredit financing is available if it helps. Nobody is going to push you to decide that day, and a mild change we are catching early may simply need a baseline and a recheck.
We Don't Let Hearing Aids End Up in a Drawer
Plenty of hearing aids get sold. Fewer get worn. Advanced EARGEAR has spent 20 years closing that gap, starting every patient with a full audiometric assessment and a conversation about what they actually need to hear at home and at work. We verify the fit, adjust as your hearing changes, and service your devices at every one of our Ohio offices, whatever brand you wear and wherever you bought it.
