Hearing Loss
What Hearing Loss in Akron Actually Looks Like
Hearing loss in Akron, OH rarely announces itself. The television creeps louder, restaurants turn into work, and family starts repeating themselves before anyone uses the word. Causes stack up over a lifetime: age, noise on the job, genetics, ear infections, medications, and conditions like diabetes or heart disease. The loss can be sensorineural, conductive, or a mix of both, in one ear or in both. A full audiometric assessment tells us which.
What Untreated Hearing Loss Costs You
Advanced EARGEAR exists because of two people who stopped hearing well. Debra Valatka watched her grandparents spend a small fortune on hearing aids that ended up in a drawer, and watched them go quiet in rooms full of family. That is the real cost of untreated hearing loss โ conversations you stop joining, invitations you stop taking, and a brain working overtime to fill in what your ears no longer deliver. Treated early, most of that is avoidable.

Hearing Loss FAQs
Questions patients across Summit, Licking, Tuscarawas, and Muskingum counties ask: the early signs, what causes adult hearing loss, when to get a baseline test, and how to protect what you still have.
The early signs of hearing loss tend to show up as changes in behavior rather than volume. You ask people to repeat themselves, restaurants and family gatherings get tiring to sit through, the television climbs a few notches, phone calls get harder than they used to be, and it starts to feel like everybody mumbles. Plenty of people quietly stop going to the places where listening takes the most work.
Because it builds slowly, the people closest to you usually notice before you do. If that describes your last few months, a full hearing evaluation at Advanced EARGEAR replaces the guesswork with an audiogram you can actually read. Call our Akron office at (330) 785-0800 to get on the schedule, or pick whichever of our four Ohio clinics is closest.
Two causes account for most of what we see. The first is age-related hearing loss, or presbycusis, the gradual change inside the inner ear that comes with the years. The second is noise-induced hearing loss, built up over a working life around power tools, plant floors, farm equipment, motorcycles, firearms, and loud music. Both damage the hair cells that convert sound into signal, and neither grows back.
Ear infections, head injury, family history, certain medications, and conditions like diabetes or heart disease all contribute as well. Most patients arrive with several of these layered together. A full audiometric assessment at Advanced EARGEAR sorts out which part is permanent and which part is treatable, and when the cause looks medical, we send you to your physician or an ENT with the findings in hand.
Around age 50 is a sensible starting point, even if conversation still feels easy. That first audiogram becomes the reference we compare every later test against, which is what turns a vague sense that something has changed into a measurable answer. After that, a check every couple of years catches gradual decline while it is still easy to work with.
Come in sooner if you spend your days around noise, have close relatives who lost hearing early, notice ringing in one or both ears, or already find yourself leaning in during conversations. Testing is available at all four Advanced EARGEAR clinics: Akron at (330) 785-0800, Newark at (740) 920-4608, and Newcomerstown and Zanesville at (740) 920-4609.
Cover your ears anywhere the volume stays above roughly 85 decibels: shop tools, mowers and trimmers, motorcycles, ranges, plant floors, and live music. Drugstore foam plugs are better than nothing, but they seal inconsistently and most people stop wearing them. Custom hearing protection from Advanced EARGEAR is molded to your ears, so it stays comfortable through a full shift or a full round.
Volume is only half of it. Time matters too, so give your ears quiet stretches after a loud day and keep headphone levels reasonable. If you already have measurable loss, wearing hearing aids that are fitted properly keeps the hearing pathway working instead of idle. We make protection for musicians, tradespeople, truck drivers, and shooters at every one of our Ohio offices.
