OTC Hearing Aids
What OTC Hearing Aids Actually Do
The FDA opened this category in 2022, so over-the-counter hearing aids in Akron, OH can now be bought off a shelf or online without seeing anyone. They are built for adults over 18 with hearing loss they judge to be mild or moderate, and you set them up yourself through a phone app. For some people that is genuinely enough. The catch is in the word judge.
Get Tested Before You Spend Anything
Self-assessment is where this goes wrong. Plenty of people who describe their loss as mild turn out to have a moderate or uneven loss, or wax blocking the canal, or something an ENT should look at. A full audiometric assessment costs you one appointment and tells you which category you are actually in. Then buying OTC becomes an informed choice instead of a guess. Our hearing evaluations page explains what testing involves.
OTC and Prescription Questions
Straight answers on over-the-counter hearing aids: how they differ from prescription devices, who should avoid them, and why a hearing test comes first either way.
OTC devices ship with a preset amplification range and you tune them yourself in an app. There is no audiogram behind the settings, no one measuring what is reaching your eardrum, and no appointment when something stops working. They are capped at mild to moderate loss by design.
Prescription devices are programmed against your measured hearing in each ear, fitted to your canal, and adjusted over time as your hearing shifts. They reach the full range of loss, handle uneven hearing between ears, and include tinnitus programs. For a measurable hearing loss, that gap shows up in how much speech you actually understand.
The category excludes children entirely. Beyond that, skip OTC and get seen if your hearing dropped suddenly, if one ear is clearly worse than the other, if you have drainage or pain, if you have had ear surgery, or if you hear ringing that bothers you.
Sudden hearing loss in particular is time sensitive. Treated quickly it often responds; left for weeks it frequently does not, so that one warrants a call rather than an online order. Severe and profound losses are outside what OTC amplification can reach at all. Call Akron at (330) 785-0800 — or the office nearest you — and we will tell you honestly whether you need us.
We would say yes, and not only because we sell hearing aids. An audiogram maps your hearing at each frequency in both ears, which is the difference between a device that clarifies speech and one that just raises the volume on everything including the noise you were already struggling with.
Testing also catches what amplification cannot fix. Impacted wax, a perforated eardrum, a loss that appeared overnight, or a difference between ears that should be investigated medically. Our team has run these assessments across Ohio since 2006, and the case history gets completed with you rather than handed over on a clipboard. Call Akron at (330) 785-0800, or any of our four Ohio offices.
Bring it in. We will test your hearing, look at what the device is set to, and tell you whether it is a reasonable match for the loss you actually have. Sometimes the answer is that it is fine and you just need the fit corrected or the wax cleared.
When it is not a match, you will know why, in plain terms, with your audiogram in front of you. Nobody here benefits from talking you out of something that works. We also service and maintain devices from every major brand at all four Ohio offices, so you are not starting from scratch with us either way.
We Don't Let Hearing Aids End Up in a Drawer
